3 Dangerous Roadway Hazards To Watch Out For

Knowing what roadway hazards may fall into your path can save you time, money and may even save your life.

What are the common causes of accidents and how can you stay proactive in protecting your vehicle and your passengers from harm?

1. Distracted Drivers

You might not text and drive, but you have no assurance that other drivers are adhering to the same safety standards. Distracted driving is quickly becoming one of the most serious risks to roadway traveler safety.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more than nine people are killed and more than 1,153 are injured every day in a car accident that involves a distracted driver.

Texting isn’t the only cause for distraction, either. Operating navigation systems, eating and talking on the phone are all dangerous activities that take away from the driver’s focus.

The first step in avoiding this roadway hazard is to stay completely alert yourself, then watch for signs of distraction in other drivers close to you. If another vehicle is swerving, driving much slower or faster than the speed limit or braking suddenly, avoid getting too close.

2. Recklessness

From speeding to neglecting to use a turn signal, reckless driving is a major contributing factor in car accidents. In 2012, speeding alone caused 30 percent of all car crashes in which fatalities were reported.

You can help reduce recklessness as one of the common roadway hazards by not:

  • Tailgating

  • Getting involved in road rage incidents

  • Running red lights and stop signs.

Also, it’s important to report drivers you suspect could cause an accident due to their reckless, irresponsible behavior.

3. Operating Under the Influence

It doesn’t matter if you never drink and drive — you can still become the victim of a drunk driving accident. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2 out of every 3 people will be involved in a drunk driving car crash in their lifetimes. In 2013, one person was killed in a drunk driving accident every 52 minutes.

You can’t control other people’s choices, but you can do your best to keep yourself safe by staying on high alert when you drive at night and on the weekends, the times when most drunk driving accidents occur.
